The tumble dryer operates by heating air, and blowing it through a drum, which is turned by a motor, to tumble the laundry. The air is heated by an element, and two thermostats control the heat of the element. These usually come in a kit, commonly called a stat kit. One of these thermostats is to control the temperature at the desired heat setting for each particular load of clothing, and the other is a thermal cut out, to prevent the element from overheating. This is also referred to as a safety thermostat, as it will prevent the element from causing a fire by continuous heating. If the tumble dryer does not heat, it may be that the element is faulty, but alternatively, it could be that, due to interruption of the cooling air flow the element has overheated, and the thermal cut out has operated, cutting off the power to the element. This safety thermostat, or thermal cut out, is a ‘one time’ component, and will now have to be replaced.
