About Washing Machine thermostats
Washing machine thermostats are vital to ensuring the right balance of hot and cold water is added to the wash cycle at the right time. In modern washers cold water only is fed into the machine and the element heats the water to the desired temperature, 30 or 40 degrees in most cases. The thermostat tells the washing machine when the correct temperature is attained. It also helps maintain the correct temperature too. Thermostats work by measuring current through a bimetalic or electronic strip which changes with temperature. The sensor can then send a signal to the relay to turn off or on the heating element. To prevent the thermostat constantly turning the washing machine element on and off a hysteresis is set to within a few degrees as a tolerance. Thermostats are available for many makes and models from Spares Direct.
About Tumble Dryer Thermostats
There are usually two thermostats in a tumble dryer, and they are usually supplied as a kit, sometimes referred to as a stat kit. This is comprised of a control thermostat, to regulate heat, and a safety thermostat, or cut out, to cut off the element in case of overheating. The thermostats are attached to the element. The thermostat is an important part of the tumble dryer system, as it controls the heat produced by the element. Some tumble dryers offer one heat setting only, and in this case, the thermostat will prevent the element from running the tumble dryer at too hot a temperature. More commonly, the tumble dryer features a choice of at least two heat settings, for regular, or more delicate fabrics, and in some more sophisticated models, more heat choices may be available. In this case, the thermostat controls the heat selected by the user. If the thermostat is faulty, then the tumble dryer will usually run too hot, but occasionally, it may not heat at all, as the faulty thermostat will interrupt the operation of the element. If a tumble dryer is not heating, both the element, and the thermostat could be suspect, and should be checked. Commonly, opening the tumble dryer door during operation will cause stopping of airflow and short term overheating of the element, which will cause the safety thermostat to come in to play, shutting off the element. If this happens, the safety thermostat must be replaced.
